SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly dropped a narrow, competitive match 4-2 to San Diego State on Friday evening under the lights at Ronca Tennis Center.

The Aztecs (5-8) claimed the doubles point to open the match and secured three singles victories to earn the road win, while the Mustangs (7-4) battled back with two singles wins of their own before the match was clinched by a pair of SDSU singles.

San Diego State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking two of the three doubles matches. The Aztecs' No. 3 pair of Anderson/Johann fell first to Cal Poly's Haviv/Matthysen, with the Mustang duo posting a convincing 6-4 victory to put themselves on the board and increase their record together (3-1).

San Diego State responded quickly on court one, as Kleege/Lofman defeated Hoeijmans/Lubbe 6-4 before No. 2 pair Gonzalez/Hazli outlasted Cross/Kamyshev in a dramatic 7-6 (0) tiebreak to secure the doubles point for the Aztecs. Those Mustang pairs fell to 2-2 and 4-2 on the year, respectively.

The Mustangs got a quick point back with Sean Kamyshev taking down SDSU’s Finn Willman in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (5) on court five. Jovan Lubbe, battling at No. 2, dropped his first set 6-3 before storming back to take the final two sets 6-1, 6-3 over Imran Daniel Hazli, overturning the score to favor the Mustangs, 2-1. Lubbe evened his record on the year to 5-5.

SDSU’s No. 1 singles player Aleksi Lofman rallied past Luc Hoeijmans 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 shortly after to even the match score at 2-2. Lars Johann and Cal Poly’s No. 4 Jack Cross fought to a third set as well with the Aztecs earning a penultimate third point (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) before Raz Haviv fell just minutes later at No. 3 to Eugenio Gonzalez 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-0 for the match-winning point. Hoeijmans dropped just his third dual result of the season (8-3).

The No. 6 singles match between Cal Poly's Aaron Eliscu and San Diego State's Brock Anderson was left unfinished with the foes splitting one set apiece. Eliscu remains 7-2 this season and second on the team for singles dual wins.

Cal Poly will look to bounce back against Pacific as they continue their home stand at Ronca Tennis Center with an 11 a.m. Sunday matinee matchup.
