Bulldogs Open Home Slate with Losses to ECSU, Shippensburg

BOWIE, MD — The Bowie State women's tennis team (0-2, 0-1 CIAA) opened its home slate with a pair of matches Saturday at the BSU Tennis Courts, falling 4-0 to Elizabeth City State before dropping a 4-0 decision to Shippensburg later in the day.

In the opener against Elizabeth City State, the Bulldogs competed in doubles play but were unable to secure the opening point. The Lady Vikings earned wins on courts one and two to claim the doubles point. Nakari Blunt and Asia Johnson fell to R. Freytes and N. Durham, 4-0, at No. 1 doubles, while Payton Swinton and Verneice Herndon dropped an 8-0 decision to K. Price and M. Renner at No. 2 doubles. The No. 3 doubles match was not contested.

ECSU continued its momentum in singles play, claiming the available courts to secure the match. Blunt fell to Price, 7-2, at No. 1 singles, while Johnson dropped an 8-1 decision to Freytes at No. 2 singles. Herndon fell to Durham, 8-0, at No. 3 singles, and Swinton was defeated by Renner, 8-0, at No. 4 singles. The matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were unfinished.

Herndon fell to Ava Kalist, 8-0, at No. 3 singles, while Pentorn dropped an 8-0 decision to Taylor Maguire at No. 4 singles. Swinton battled Janelle Kingsboro at No. 5 singles but fell, 8-1. At the top spot, Blunt trailed Jade Miller, 5-2, before the match went unfinished. Courts two and six were not played.
