Serena Williams leaves the door open on a potential return to tennis: "We'll see"

“I’m just going to see what happens,” Serena Williams said during her appearance on Thursday's Today show.

With that single line, the 23-time Grand Slam champion and four-time Olympic gold medallist left the sports world wondering if a return to tennis could still be on the table.

"I don’t know. We’ll see," Williams stated.

Williams did not rule out making a comeback. Now a mother of two daughters, Olympia and Adira Ohanian, Williams said: "I’m having a good time and enjoying life."

She was all smiles throughout the interview as she discussed everything from motherhood and Beyoncé to her most recent Super Bowl ad. Still, the conversation around a possible return has lingered, particularly since last December when the seven-time Wimbledon singles champion re-entered tennis’ anti-doping testing pool. The move was confirmed by the International Tennis Integrity Agency and fuelled speculation that the legend could be considering a comeback.

She moved quickly to address the rumours directly on X. “Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy,” Williams wrote.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time, and unquestionably one of the most dominant players in tennis history, Williams last competed professionally at the U.S. Open in 2022. She lost a three-set third-round match to Ajla Tomljanovic, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1. She wrote in an essay for Vogue that she was “evolving away” from the sport, but never formally announced her retirement.
