Cunniff reflects on ‘positive season’ as Wanderers Women take on champions

Tom Cunniff reckons there have been plenty of positives to build from this season as Wanderers Women prepare to wrap up the league campaign with a trip to champions AFC Fylde.

The Whites are guaranteed to finish in third place, regardless of this weekend’s result, but face a tough test against unbeaten opponents who have already secured top spot.

Cunniff took charge of the side in October, initially on an interim basis before becoming the permanent head coach.

“Overall, it has been a positive season so we are really proud of the team,” he told the club channels. “Obviously, it will be a tough task next week which we are ready for. We want these challenges.

“Congratulations to Fylde. They do deserve to become champions, a very good team. We will go there full of confidence after our run of form and hopefully give them a good game.”

Bolton continued their unbeaten run with a point at FC United of Manchester over the weekend thanks to Ellie Thomas-Leek’s late equaliser.

Cunniff felt it was another encouraging display but admitted that his side need to be more ruthless in front of goal at times.

“A frustrating result but a very positive performance,” he added. “I thought we played some really good stuff at times, just a bit of small details in terms of silly free kicks on the edge of our box. But overall, a really positive performance.

“The gameplan we had, the girls executed to a point and we just couldn’t finish our chances, which has been a bit of a theme this season. But we are getting in those areas and some of the football was very good.

“We asked at half time to be a bit more clinical when we can, and it did start a little bit frustrating again where we had a lot of chances but just couldn’t finish them.

“We have got a lot of exciting forward players here so they are capable of doing it. It is just about doing it in pressure moments when it is needed on a Sunday.”
