Men’s Tennis sweeps Mississippi Valley State to cap weekend

FLORENCE, Ala. (February 28, 2026) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team split its two-dual outing on Saturday, taking a 5-0 sweep over Mississippi Valley State from the UNA Tennis Courts.

North Alabama (7-6) leaves the weekend with two wins after tallying a win on Friday, Feb. 27 against EKU. The Lions opened the day against Troy but fell at home in a hard-fought battle against the Trojans. It marked UNA's first defeat at home since Jan. 29, 2024.

UNA rebounded following the Troy dual to sweep Mississippi Valley State.

Against Troy, the doubles portion set the tone for the entirety of the dual. Juniors Alberto Altur and Izan Orgiles claimed a 6-0 win from the top flight over Stephan Noale and Thiago Drozdowski. The second and third flight were battles that resulted in 7-6 final scores, but the Trojans claimed both for the doubles point.

Freshman Benjamin Meyers and senior Lachlan Brain answered for the Lions with two quick singles bouts. Meyers was victorious from flight six to defeat Drozdowski, 6-0, 6-1. Brain continued with a 6-1, 6-2 top-flight triumph over Ausias Martin Melo.

Altur fought back to earn UNA's third team point with a second-flight win over Yeray Andres Pastor, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Despite Altur's victory, Troy took three of the four remaining singles courts to land the road win.

The second dual against Mississippi Valley State only played singles, but North Alabama rolled on for the home win.

Brain opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Joshua Mbasha from flight no. 1. Altur followed from flight no 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sibusico Dube. Orgiles landed a 6-1, 6-0 from court three over Blessed Kutyauripo, and junior Alex Despoja defeated Ezekial Smoot, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Whit Davis closed the dual with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Malachi Finley.
