The story of Obed Vargas is unlike any other. Born in Anchorage, Alaska, to a Mexican family, he grew up far from the global spotlight of world football, but with a very clear dream to one day play for Atlético de Madrid. While many kids dreamed of Real Madrid or Barcelona, he identified with a different badge, a different style and a different philosophy.

Seattle were defeated, but Obed Vargas stood out. He controlled the tempo of the midfield, broke lines with long passes, won duels and covered the pitch from box to box for more than 90 minutes. The winter transfer window finally sealed the story. Obed Vargas signed for Atlético de Madrid, committing to a long-term contract and becoming the fifth Mexican to wear the red-and-white shirt, following Hugo Sánchez, Luis García, Raúl Jiménez and Héctor Herrera.

According to information published by specialized journalists such as Fabrizio Romano, the deal was completed from the MLS for a fee close to $3 million, confirming Atlético’s bet on a young, modern and versatile midfielder.
