The upcoming 19th Edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will feature 84 matches in 2026, making it the largest in IPL history to date, compared with 74 in the previous season.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to release the IPL 2026 schedule in two phases. These official members are monitoring the Assembly Elections in West Bengal and Assam in May-June 2026 before confirming all fixtures.

Initially, the schedule for the first 15 days of the tournament will likely be announced. The remaining fixtures will be revealed later once the election dates and security arrangements are finalised.

The IPL 2026 playoffs are expected to begin on May 26, 2026. Bengaluru has already been confirmed as the host for Qualifier 1 and the Final, which is scheduled for May 31, 2026. Meanwhile, the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 are likely to take place in Ahmedabad and Raipur, although official confirmation is still awaited.

Delay in IPL 2026 Schedule Announcement

As of around 10 PM on March 9, the IPL 2026 schedule had still not been officially released, leaving many fans confused and frustrated.

Earlier during the day, speculation began after listings on Jio TV suggested that the fixtures would be announced at 4 PM IST. Later, updated TV schedules from Star Sports hinted at announcement times of 6 PM IST and then 9 PM IST. However, none of these timings was officially confirmed by the BCCI.

With only 18 days remaining before the tournament begins, the delay has increased curiosity and impatience among cricket followers.

Because of the uncertainty, several fans have even started sharing unofficial IPL 2026 schedules on social media. These lists are not verified and should not be treated as authentic, but they reflect growing frustration among supporters.

Some experts believe the official schedule might be announced only after state election dates are revealed on March 11, since teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Rajasthan Royals could be affected by polling arrangements.

There are also rumours circulating online claiming that the schedule could be unveiled during the IPL 2026 opening ceremony on March 28, though there has been no official confirmation from either BCCI or Star Sports.

IPL 2026 Format, Matches and Host Cities

The IPL 2026 tournament will continue with the double round-robin format. With 10 teams competing, each franchise will face opponents both at home and away.

This format will produce 80 league-stage matches, followed by four playoff games, taking the total to 84 matches for the season.

Matches are expected to be hosted across 10 major Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Raipur, allowing fans in different regions to watch games live.

Traditionally, the IPL opening match features the previous season’s finalists. Following that pattern, the first match of IPL 2026 could see Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Punjab Kings, though the BCCI has not yet confirmed the official opening fixture.
