Nick Kyrgios is getting ready to return to action during the clay court season, following a break from competition since the Australian Open.

He didn’t play singles at his home Grand Slam, instead choosing to focus on doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Kyrgios later announced that he plans to take part in grass court events this year, and was soon handed a wild card for the Stuttgart Open.

The 28-year-old has now added another grass court tournament to his schedule, one he hasn’t played since 2019.

Kyrgios handed wild card for grass-court event

The Mallorca Open has confirmed that Kyrgios will be joining the field after being handed a wild card entry, just a week before Wimbledon gets underway.

The tournament in Spain is still relatively new on the ATP calendar, with this year marking only its sixth edition.

Past winners include Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev. As for Kyrgios, he’s only made one previous appearance at the event.

That came in 2022 when he picked up a win over Laslo Djere in the opening round but was forced to withdraw due to injury before his next match.

Roberto Bautista Agut benefited from that walkover, and it was Tsitsipas who eventually took home the title.

Kyrgios seems to be putting together a full schedule ahead of the grass court season, though it’s still unclear whether he’ll be given a Wimbledon wild card. He’s played some of his best tennis there and reached the final back in 2022.

Kyrgios’ record on grass

Kyrgios has always looked at home on grass, with his 36–19 record matching what he’s posted on hard courts.

He has a 65% win rate on both surfaces, though he’s played far more matches on hard courts over his career.

His run to the Wimbledon final in 2022 remains the only time he reached a final on grass. Despite that, he’s always been a threat during the short grass season.

Although Kyrgios isn’t at his peak anymore, a return to anything close to his best form could see him do well in both Mallorca and Stuttgart.

Both are ATP 250 events, so don’t expect many top-ranked players to feature there.
