Sir Alex Ferguson Shut Down Piers Morgan Calling David Beckham ‘Overrated’

While Piers Morgan is known to be somewhat of a superfan when it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo, the Arsenal fan has publicly labelled another Manchester United legend 'the most overrated player in history'.

That's a sentiment that the greatest Premier League manager of all time, Sir Alex Ferguson, clearly disagrees with. The iconic Scot managed a plethora of world-class players during his incredibly successful 27-year reign at Old Trafford.

One of those sensational players wasn't all he was cracked up to be. Well, in Morgan's opinion, anyway. The British journalist got involved in a heated Twitter debate with legendary England forward Gary Lineker and was less than complimentary of the United icon in question.

Piers Morgan Slammed 'Fame-Hungry' David Beckham

Morgan, 60, aimed a clear dig at United legend David Beckham after his namesake Odell Beckham Jr scored a touchdown in the 2022 Super Bowl. He tweeted: "Great to watch a Beckham who can actually play football…"

That's what prompted Lineker to step in and defend the 115-cap England international, saying: "You might dislike him, for whatever reason, but David Beckham was a great footballer. One of our finest."

Many people would put the Class of '92 star down as one of the greatest English players to have ever graced the turf. However, Morgan isn't even convinced Beckham would make the Arsenal 2003-04 team. He rebutted:

"You might want to suck up to him, for whatever reason, but Beckham was the most overrated player in history. Wouldn't have got onto the Arsenal Invincibles bench."

As if 'Golden Balls' needed his accomplishments written down to display his brilliance, Lineker pointed out: "Six Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, one Champions League, one La Liga, one Ligue 1. Ballon d’Or runner-up. 115 caps for England, 59 as captain. One of the best crossers of the ball the game has ever seen. Yeah, overrated."

"Take away the crossing & free-kicks, he was a fame-hungry snail with dumb haircuts who only won that much because of the truly great players around him," was Morgan's final word on the matter. It's safe to say that he's not a fan.

Sir Alex Ferguson Was Full of Praise For Beckham

Despite having a famous fallout, which involved Ferguson kicking a boot at Beckham's head, the mutual respect between the two men has remained. They achieved greatness together, and that isn't lost on the retired manager.

Shortly after he stepped away from the dugout in 2013, Ferguson was handed the almost impossible task of naming his all-time greatest XI from players he managed. He responded (per The Mirror): "People ask you: 'Who is your best Man United team?' and it's absolutely impossible.

"It is absolutely impossible. You look at the strikers I had, going back to [Brian] McClair, [Mark] Hughes, [Andy] Cole, Cantona, [Ruud] van Nistelrooy, [Louis] Saha, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, [Dwight] Yorke, Teddy Sheringham."

After listing many outstanding candidates for various positions in the team, Fergie was more sure of the midfield selections he'd go with. He listed Beckham alongside the likes of Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, as he said:

"The midfield was probably a bit easier because you have [Roy] Keane, [Bryan] Robson and Scholes -- they were fantastic players -- and [David] Beckham, Ronaldo and [Ryan] Giggs."

By even being mentioned by possibly the finest manager the sport has ever seen, Beckham's status as a legend of the game is sealed.
