Football Australia statement Iranian Women's National Team

The Iranian Women’s National Team came to Australia to represent their country, heritage and culture. Every player and official who participated on and off the field did so with purpose, pride, and a deep love for the game.

Football Australia recognises the incredible determination these athletes and officials showed to make their country and supporters proud, in light of the situation facing their region, and did so with tremendous courage.

All of these brave women deserve our support and respect, irrespective of the personal choices which have been made under circumstances many of us will never fully understand.

Football Australia considers all these athletes and officials part of our global football family.

To all the players and officials, we extend our hands of friendship and support. For the players and officials who have stayed, we welcome you into the Australian football family.

For those who have returned home, we extend our gratitude for your participation in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and trust you find support, solace and security with your families and friends back home.

We celebrate all these athletes’ dedication to football and remain mindful of the unique situations that these women will face. Their passion for sport is something that can unite us all.
