Referee appointed for Man Utd vs Brentford is one of Bruno Fernandes' biggest adversaries in football

Manchester United’s next Premier League outing comes against Brentford on Monday night at Old Trafford, with the referee for the clash being named.

After beating Chelsea last weekend, Manchester United are effectively one win away from securing Champions League football for next season.

Despite the solid league sitting, United have been cost by refereeing mistakes this season, and Michael Carrick will be wary of further decisions playing a role against Brentford.

Especially when considering the history of the referee appointed to take charge on Monday night.

Chris Kavanagh appointed referee as Manchester United face Brentford

After the awful officiating at Old Trafford last Monday, it is more important than ever to see who is taking charge of the Brentford clash.

The Premier League have confirmed that Chris Kavanagh will be officiating on Monday.

The news of Kavanagh’s appointment won’t be welcomed by United or, particularly, Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes won’t be pleased to see Kavanagh

Fernandes and referees often have a love-hate relationship, as he must infuriate them just as they do him.

But Kavanagh and Fernandes have history, with multiple incidents of note in recent seasons.

At Craven Cottage back in August, Fernandes and Kavanagh fell out when the referee bumped into United’s captain before he took a penalty, which he subsequently missed.

Fernandes clearly felt hard done by over this, and the event completely threw off his game as he struggled to play after this.

Kavanagh was once completely wrong to send off Fernandes

Another incident involving Fernandes and Kavanagh came when United were thrashed 3-0 by Spurs in 2024.

In this defeat, Fernandes was wrongly sent off for a tackle on James Maddison, which the Spurs captain admitted wasn’t a red.

Fernandes was sent off and handed a three-game suspension. However, United successfully appealed against the red card and won this appeal, given it was quite clearly not violent conduct.

Given United’s recent troubles with officiating, seeing Kavanagh won’t be pleasing to the Red Devils.

The good news for United is that the most recent game refereed by Kavanagh saw United win 2-1 against Palace.
