As the star batter celebrates his 37th birthday, his lean physique, stamina, and discipline continue to impress both fans and fellow athletes. Known for setting high standards in every aspect of his life, Kohli’s fitness journey is defined by routine and consistency — from his workout sessions to his simple, repetitive diet. Over the years, he has shifted to a plant-based lifestyle and built a formula that keeps him strong, focused, and performing at his best well into his late thirties.

Kohli’s shift toward fitness began around 2012 when he realized that maintaining his body was just as important as honing his skills. Since then, he has built a routine grounded in balanced nutrition, cardio, and strength training. Speaking to Star Sports, he said, “When you begin your fitness journey, you experiment with everything, vitamins, extra hydration, proteins, until you figure out what truly works for you. That’s when you find the right balance.”

He believes diet plays a bigger role than workouts. “The biggest challenge I’ve faced with fitness is food. You can push yourself physically, but eating right is a mental game. Your taste buds and cravings can either help or hinder your progress,” he shared.

A Simple, Repetitive Diet

What makes Kohli’s approach stand out is his ability to eat the same meals daily without losing interest. “I can eat the same meals three times a day for six months without any issues,” he revealed. His meals are simple and light — “Around 90% of my food is steamed or boiled, with just salt, pepper, and lime. I’m not someone who chases taste, I focus on what’s right for my body. I enjoy salads with a little dressing and pan-grilled dishes with some olive oil. I avoid curries, but I do eat dal, and as a Punjabi, I can’t skip rajma and lobhiya.”

He prefers his food lightly cooked, avoiding deep-fried and heavily spiced dishes. In an interview with Jatin Sapru, he mentioned that even when eating rice, he opts for “slightly fried rice” rather than dishes rich in masalas.

Why He Turned Vegetarian

In 2018, Kohli faced a health scare when he suffered from acidity and high uric acid levels. Doctors also noted low bone calcium levels, which made him rethink his diet. To reduce his uric acid levels and improve his overall well-being, he gave up meat and switched to a vegetarian diet.

Once a self-confessed “heavy meat eater,” Kohli now follows a diet that is “90% animal protein free and dairy free.” However, he clarified in an interview with Curly Tales that he isn’t fully vegan, as he still includes certain dairy products in moderation.
