EAST LANSING, Mich. - The University of Minnesota tennis team wrapped up play Sunday at the Spartan Invite at Michigan State University.

The Golden Gophers competed in singles against Michigan State, Xavier and Indiana, earning three victories over Michigan State.

"We came in with specific goals to compete together as a team and get the job done, and we did that," head coach Lois Arterberry said. "We saw improvements in our overall tennis level as well as our confidence on court. As we head into the fall offseason, we'll keep working on our technical and tactical development to be ready for the spring season. We're also looking to improve our consistency in how we compete individually, but as a team, we accomplished what we set out to do."

Key Moments

The Gophers earned three singles victories to close the weekend. Mia Liepert defeated Michigan State's Oriana Parkins-Godwin 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, while Sofia Pinto topped Sarah Fazlagic 6-4, 6-0. Anali Kocevar added a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against Issey Purser. Chase Boyer of Indiana defeated Nora Knezevic 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, Ellie Brotherton of Xavier edged Arina Valitova 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), Ellie Blackford of Michigan State beat Jeselle Ante 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), and Matilde Morais of Michigan State defeated Anlin Xie 6-3, 6-4.

Next Up

The Gopher tennis team will return in January for the 2026 spring season. A few Minnesota student-athletes may still qualify to compete in individual tournaments this fall.
