South Korea, Australia and Kuwait have formally ‌expressed interest in hosting the ‍2035 Asian Cup in addition to bidding for the 2031 tournament, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on Wednesday.

Japan had expressed interest in hosting the 2035 edition, although they were also said to be considering a bid to co-host that tournament with South Korea.

“At this stage, joint hosting is not impossible,” a Korea Football Association official said in November, noting that plans were still at an early stage and would first have to be approved by both governments.

The Japan Football Association (JFA) said it was “conducting various studies” around a possible bid.

“We are considering bidding for the Asian Cup and it is true that we have discussed co-hosting with South Korea and other countries as one option,” a JFA official said.

With the announcement from the AFC, South Korea and Japan have decided the best option is to bid for the tournament independently.
