Liverpool are ready to make a managerial change and have already opened talks with former player Xabi Alonso about becoming their new boss, according to reports. The Reds made it three games without a win in the Premier League when they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Saturday. That defeat leaves them fifth in the standings, still two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, although Unai Emery's side now have a game in hand - against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.Arne Slot is under increasing pressure at Anfield, with the threat of missing out on Champions League football next season very real. After winning the Premier League in his first season in England, Slot spent big in the summer transfer window, bringing in Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, Jeremeie Frimpong and Alexander Isak, breaking the British transfer record twice in the process. But the new signings have struggled to bed in, added to the drop off in output from Mohamed Salah, and the Reds have been nowhere near the heights they hit in winning the title last season.Esteemed journalist Henry Winter described their title defence as "one of the worst in years".Speaking on X, he said: "Liverpool’s anaemic title defence has to go down as one of the worst in years. To play with this lack of intensity, this lack of organisation defensively, this lack of pace is so poor and reflects badly on Arne Slot. Liverpool teams have identity. This one doesn’t."Liverpool are such a difficult watch: good players shorn of energy and belief. Mitigating factors exist, including the failure to move earlier last summer and land Marc Guehi that proved very damaging."A decision has to be made on Slot in the summer, but surely not now."Football365 have reported on the claims that Liverpool will ask Alonso about cutting short his break from football since leaving Real Madrid in January, to replace Slot and become the Reds' new manager.Jurgen Klopp Loves Xabi AlonsoAlonso would be a popular choice of next manager at Anfield, with former boss Jurgen Klopp previously calling his former player a "genius", something that Sky Germany reporter Felix Fischer agreed with when he was at Bayer Leverkusen. He said: "He does such a tremendous job. He is not only a genius tactician and in terms of how he prepares his team, but he is a gentleman. Everything he does, he does right."Klopp also said: "The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department... Former world-class player, from a coaching family as well which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing. The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional."
