John Brewin reports from the Vitality Stadium …ShareAndoni Iraola: 'We started really slowly'“I don’t think it’s a great point for us,” says the Bournemouth head coach in an interview with TNT Sports. “I think playing at home we were probably closest to scoring the three points but I think we don’t deserve them because we had to pay for our slow start. We started really slow and that’s happening to us lately. Sometimes we are not paying the consequences but today we did. We were able to rescue one point but not the three.”ShareUpdated at 10.21 ESTMarcus Tavernier: 'It was a tough battle out there'“I feel like it was a scrappy game from start to finish, it was a tough battle out there,” says the Bournemouth winger in an interview with the BBC. “We knew in the second half we had to come out fast. The gaffer pointed out that we had to put in balls early.“It’s something we’ve worked on every week, especially as wide players putting the ball into the box for centre-forwards, and luckily it fell for Evanilson for his goal. We never give up. We know the first half wasn’t ourselves. In the second half we knew we needed a reaction and we got that today.“It’s always the plan to try and win games of football. Today it wasn’t meant to be but we dust ourselves down because we’ve got a quick turnaround.”ShareUpdated at 10.21 ESTLe Bris is asked for his thoughts on the penalty Sunderland were denied for a blatant Alejandro Jimenez shove in the back of Enzo Le Fee after just two minutes. He says “it’s a shame”. Having made that comment, he adds “I can’t comment because it’s not my decision”.ShareUpdated at 10.21 ESTRégis Le Bris: 'It was important to show this character'“It’s a good point because here is a tough place,” says the Sunderland head coach in an interview with TNT Sports. “They have a clear identity, intensity, duel driven, so it’s hard. We tested today the mentality and the character of the squad and we reacted well after a tough run. It was important to show this character and the point is imporatant for us.“After three defeatys it’s not easy to react and for a newly promoted side, the confidence is always a topic. We worked this week on that idea, that we had to show intensity and match the way they drive their duels. I thyink it was good and after that you have to add quality on the ball and we had some spells but it wasn’t enough. Maybe we didn’t seize our key moments in the second half but at the end our togetherness was strong.”ShareUpdated at 10.21 ESTPremier League clockwatch: Emillia Hawkins will have updates and reaction from this afternoon’s three o’clock Premier League fixtures, among other matches. The ball’s floated into the Sunderland penalty area and the visitors hack it clear.Share90+5 min: The yellow card is out again. Alex Scott is booked for dragging out of Mayenda’s shirt. A VAR check for a Ballard “foul” on Unal decides the Sunderland defender didn’t drag the Bournemouth substitute to the ground as the ball was coming into the box in the build-up to that counter-attack. Hmmm, I’m not so sure about that …ShareUpdated at 09.25 EST90+3 min: Bournemouth appeal for a penalty as the ball is kicked against Dan Ballard’s arm, which was by his side. Christie slides in to foul him and is booked.Share88 min: There’s a bit of a scramble in the Sunderland box as Toth picks out Unal, who jinks this way and that but is unable to get a shot away from 10 yards out. That’s some serious last-ditch defending from Sunderland.Share87 min: Oh dear. Enzo Le Fee and Nilson Angulo try one from off the training ground that probably should have stayed there for another couple of weeks at least. Another promising dead ball situation goes to waste for Sunderland.Share86 min: Toth is immediately booked for hauling back Geertruida. Sunderland have a free-kick about 35 yards from the Bournemouth goal.Share84 min: Bournemouth substitution: Evanilson limps off after coming off the bench to score Bournemouth’s equaliser. Moments after Kroupi had come close to connecting with a Jimenez pull-back, Alex Scott sends a shot from distance drifting high and wide.Share70 min: Alejandro Jimenez unleashes a low shot from distance that fizzes just wide of the right post. It wasn’t too far away but I think Roefs had it covered.ShareUpdated at 08.59 EST69 min: Sunderland substitution: Bertrand Traore on for Chemsdine Talbi. It’s his first appearance since Sunderland beat Newcastle in mid-December.Share68 min: Robin Roefs has been little short of outstanding in goal for Sunderland this season but he was badly caught out in the build-up to that goal by a curled Marcus Tavernier cross of the very highest quality. It was a wonderful assist.ShareThe goal stands!!! There was a hint of handball about that Evanilson header which was less than clean but it would have been extremely harsh, bordering on cruel, for VAR to recommend ruling it out. The American was a red card waiting to happen.Share60 min: VAR seem to have agreed that while Adams’ challenge was reckless, it was mitigated by the shove he got from Diarra. That seems fair enough although Xhaka begged to differ with the referee once he’d returned to his feet.Share58 min: Xhaka goes down under a scything challenge from Tyler Adams and repeatedly slaps the turf in pain. Adams is claiming he got a shove in the back from Diarra, which increased the velocity of his challenge. He gets booked and I think he’s lucky not to get a red. That was a nasty challenge and he caught Xhaka’s ankle.Share57 min: To the other side of the pitch, where Trai Hume takes a Sunderland throw-in, with his head coach standing just a couple of metres behind him. It’s all going on at the the Vitality Stadium!!!Share55 min: Sunderland win a throw-in just inside the Bournemouth half, which Geertruida takes. Moments later, they win another. There’s not a lot else of note to report in the early stages of this second half.Share53 min: Sunderland’s fans are in fine voice and have been serenading their team’s goalscorer, Eliezer Mayenda with his own song. Altogether now: “My name’s Eliezer Mayenda, I hate Sam Fender, I play up front for Sunlun!”Share51 min: Tavernier stretches out a leg to hook a cross from deep back across the Sunderland penalty area but there’s nobody on hand in a black and red shirt to take advantage.Share51 min: James Hill takes a long throw into the opposition penalty area from near the corner flag but Sunderland are able to clear their lines.Share49 min: Adams and Jimenez combine out on the right flank before working the ball inside to Senesi. The Senegal international finds himself one on one with Petrovic and forces the Bournemouth goalkeeper into a good save. Both sides have had decent penalty appeals turned down, with the shout going against Sunderland for a blatant Jimenez shove on Le Fee being the more egregious. Bournemouth have passed up a couple of half-decent opportunities to equalise and Sunderland are just about worth their lead.ShareUpdated at 08.26 EST45+2 min: Jimenez advances up the inside left and plays the ball wide to Rayan again. Brooks’ inswinger from the left is headed back towards him by a Sunderland defender.Share43 min: Bournemouth win a free-kick wide on the left. It only meets the head of Mayenda and Roefs tidies up.Share41 min: Enzo Le Fee curls a corner towards the near post, where Alex Scott hoofs it clear. It would be fair to say that Sunderland are not making the most of their set-piece opportunities so far this afternoon.Share39 min: David Brooks curls a cross from the left into the Sunderland penalty area but is unable to pick out Eli Kroupi, who is beaten by the bounce of the ball at the far post.Share36 min: Bournemouth have a penalty appeal of their own turned down as Granit Xhaka appears to wrestle Rayan to the ground at a James Hill long-throw. I’ve seen them given but they usually aren’t.Share35 min: Marcus Tavernier curls a free-kick from just outside the penalty area around the outside of the defensive wall and on target. Roefs punches it away. Noah Sadiki was booked for kicking the ball away after Geertruida had fouled Tyler Adams to concede the free-kick.Share32 min: With the ball at his feet way outside his penalty area, Roefs is pressed hard by Kroupi and both men go to ground. Bournemouth’s players appeal somewhat optimistically for a red card, Sunderland get a free-kick.Share31 min: Alex Scott pulls a low shot from a just outside the Sunderland penalty area a couple of feet wide of the upright. It was a fairly weak effort, which I think Roefs would have dealt with.Share29 min: Had Scott managed to beat Roefs with that effort, Bournemouth’s equaliser would have been a near replica of Sunderland’s opener.Share
