Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim boss may have changed Man United’s verdict on handing Harry Maguire a new deal. That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who is backing Maguire to agree a contract extension at Old Trafford.Former Man United boss Ruben Amorim did not see Maguire as part of his plans at the club, but the 32-year-old has started every game under Carrick.Maguire’s current contract expires at the end of the season, with the defender having been at Man United since joining from Leicester City in 2019.Harry Maguire ‘will get an extension’ at Man UnitedEverton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Carrick values Maguire at the club.Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Maguire may be offered a new two year deal.He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, just a few months ago we were talking about Amorim and I didn’t think Harry Maguire would be renewed at all, but then this whole, as I say, this whole feeling of being Man United again and having an identity of the people that are there, I think that Maguire will get an extension.MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES“I think that Carrick can understand the value he brings in the dressing room as well as on the pitch. He’s playing more as himself, I think as well, but certainly it’s more of a unity and an actual vision of where United are as a human group.“And that’s what Maguire adds to that particular part of it and I think they will keep him on. Now they’re learning their lessons now rather than just doing it off spreadsheets and looking at valuations and ages and data and the whole thing.“They’ve actually got a human feeling to it and that’s going to prove I think that Maguire will be useful. They’ll probably give him two years or maybe one with an option and I think that they’ll be better off for it and I think everybody’s going to start settling down and getting some unity in the squad, which is what they needed.”Man United stars set for wage increaseCarrick continued his perfect start as interim boss as Man United beat Fulham 3-2 last time out in the Premier League. The results keeps Carrick’s side in the Premier League top four, and it has now been revealed that Man United players could earn wage increases if they qualify for the Champions League this season. The club’s wage bill could therefore increase by around £30million next season, if they are in the Champions League for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign.
