Premier League winners Leicester suffer shock relegation to League One, 10 years after becoming English champions

The English club produced one of the biggest upsets in sports history back in 2016 when they fended off Arsenal and Tottenham to win the Premier League.

The following season they reached the Champions League quarter-finals, before losing to Atletico Madrid.

Five years later they also sealed a first FA Cup in their history, but since then it has been largely heartache for Foxes fans.

Leicester were relegated from the Premier League in 2023, and while they secured promotion back to the top flight the following year, they only lasted one season before dropping back down again.

Now their despair has plummeted to new depths following a 2-2 draw with Hull on Tuesday night.

The result sealed Leicester’s relegation from the Championship down to League One as they prepare for life in the third tier for the first time in 17 years.

They have accrued 48 points across 44 league matches but were deducted six earlier in the campaign due to breaches of financial regulations.

Their fate has been confirmed with two games remaining.

Manager Gary Rowett said: “We have to learn. I think the club have to accept this is the horrible part of the journey of a football club.

“This club won the Premier League not too many moons ago. That was an incredible high at the time for the fans, for everyone associated with the club.

“I think everyone saw that as an amazing achievement. I think we can be equally as disappointed with how poor this moment is.”

Following their relegation, chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha held his hands up and took the blame for the club’s decline.

He said: “Relegation to League One is now confirmed. As Chairman, that responsibility sits with me. There are no excuses.

“We have experienced the highest highs and now the lowest lows, and the pain is shared by all of us. I am truly sorry for the disappointment we have caused. I understand the strength of feeling among our supporters, and we do not take your support for granted, especially at moments like this.

“Our focus now is on what comes next. We will take the necessary decisions to move the Club forward, working together to rebuild, improve, and restore the standards expected of Leicester City. Our objective is clear - to respond strongly and compete to move this Club forward again.

“We will face this head-on. We will keep going.”
