Little boy cries inconsolably, smashes cricket bat after failing to meet Virat Kohli

A little boy was left in tears after his attempt to get an autograph from Virat Kohli was thwarted inside the team hotel during the ongoing Indian Premier League season.

According to posts circulating online, the child had been waiting at the reception of the hotel, hoping to get his cricket bat signed by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru star. As Kohli arrived with his security and staff, the boy followed him and tried to approach, but was stopped by security personnel.

Despite people in the background urging security to let the child through, he was not allowed to meet the cricketer.

The boy immediately broke down, crying inconsolably, and in a moment of frustration, smashed his cricket bat on the floor.

A video of the incident which was widely shared online featured the caption: “Universe really said, not today.”

The incident has triggered a debate on X, with opinions sharply divided. Some users expressed sympathy for the child and disappointment over the situation.

“Maybe he wasn’t in the right mindset at that time but that ignorance towards the kid is not right,” one user wrote. Another commented, “Sometimes one small moment for a star is a lifelong memory for a child.”

Others, however, wrote about the practical constraints players face, especially during match days. “Not every time a player can give you an autograph or meet fans because they have their own personal space and life. We have seen Virat Kohli meeting fans and giving autographs,” a user said.

Some also criticised the child’s reaction. “Kids these days should learn to stop showing unnecessary tantrums. Parents watching him lose a temper like that is not right,” read one comment, while another user asked, “Can Virat give autographs to hundreds of fans? Is it humanly possible?”

Virat Kohli has a long-standing reputation for stopping to engage with supporters, often going out of his way – even while boarding team buses or during intense training sessions – to sign autographs and pose for selfies.

While he has occasionally expressed the need for personal space and "freedom of choice" when dealing with intense public scrutiny, he has frequently spoken about the importance of acknowledging the fans who fuel the sport.
