What Nicky Butt thought about Chelsea player Alejandro Garnacho while at Man United

Alejandro Garnacho is never far away from criticism and this week, Nicky Butt has revealed what he really thought about the Chelsea star having worked with him at Manchester United.

Garnacho, 21, joined for £40m last summer after spending five years at Old Trafford. The Argentine joined Man United from Atletico Madrid shortly after his 16th birthday, and would play 144 matches.

Despite concerns over his attitude, Chelsea signed Garnacho. It has proven to be one of Todd Boehly’s worst signings since the American took over in West London. He’s had a hand in 12 goals in 39 outings.

Nicky Butt was Manchester United’s academy manager when Garnacho arrived at Old Trafford, having only turned 16 a few months earlier, from Atletico Madrid. Butt recalls what the Argentine winger was like.

The former Man United, Newcastle, and England midfielder claims Garnacho’s attitude was “disgraceful” while in a United shirt. He told The Good, The Bad and The Football the best thing United did was cash in.

Butt said: “When he signed at 16, I was academy manager. Garnacho was always a bit stand-offish, always thought he should be playing. He had a high opinion of himself; I just thought he had an edge about him.

“When he got into Man United’s first team, and I will say what I think. He got above his station way too quickly. Now, I hope young players get paid millions. I’m not one that says they get too much money.

“He scored the bicycle kick, which was phenomenal, and went like that [points up]. Somebody at that club should have swatted him down; maybe he ignored them. The best thing Man United did was sell him.

“Forget his ability, I don’t think he is that great anyway, but his attitude was a disgrace at Man United. He would have got treated really badly, he would’ve got taken out in training, if he was brought up with us.”

Garnacho could start for Chelsea against Brighton

Liam Rosenior has often had to defend his players in press conferences and following the game against Man United, in which Garnacho was poor after coming on, Rosenior was asked about the winger again.

It comes after reports claimed Chelsea want to sell Garnacho this summer. Rosenior simply said that it isn’t true: “I’d like to know the source of the report. These reports can come from anywhere.”
