Katsina United counter Barau's claim, say 'no fan attacked player' during NPFL game

Katsina United say none of the club’s supporters invaded the pitch and attacked a Barau FC player during their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 12 game at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.

On Saturday, Ahmad Gwale, Barau FC’s director of media operations, claimed Nana Abraham, the club’s player, was stabbed in the neck by a pitch invader during the match, which ended 1-1.

The Barau FC spokesperson said the incident happened shortly after the club equalised in the 69th minute.

Gwale alleged that “one person from the Katsina United bench or one of their fans” invaded the pitch and struck Abraham on the neck.

The club’s spokesperson claimed that the assailant was armed with “something like a sharp object”.

Responding to the claims, Katsina United said the allegations “do not reflect what truly transpired”.

The club said although the atmosphere was “tense due to contentious officiating decisions that understandably frustrated supporters,” the discontent “was managed within the confines of order and security”.

“Katsina United remains committed to professionalism, discipline, and fair play both on and off the field,” the statement reads.

“Regarding Barau FC, whose actions and responses appear to have amplified this false narrative, the club will leave the matter to the League Management Body to investigate and take appropriate measures in line with the rules of the game.”
